Music Theory The music theory course explores the fundamentals of music and covers a broad range of musical concepts such as writing music, chord structure and progressions and the analyzing of major and minor pieces. This course is supplemented by work in both sight singing and ear training. This course enhances written work by allowing the student to transfer music theory into aural concepts. It is offered for one semester each year. Senior High Choir Senior high choir allows the student to work with other voices as well as participate in solo work. Four part singing is the standard for this choir. A variety of music is sung (classical, contemporary and spirituals) while giving emphasis to counting rhythms and reading pitches. Senior High Band This course is an elective for students in grades 10 -12 who have had experience in the junior high band. Students continue to develop their instrumental skills during their weekly rehearsals and lessons. There are also many opportunities to perform solos and ensembles as well as several concerts each year. Students are encouraged to develop their appreciation for sacred and secular band literature and to use their talents to praise and worship God.
Junior High Choir Junior high choir allows the student to work with other voices as well as participate in solo work. The junior high setting gives special attention to the boys changing voice through both the tenor and baritone options. A variety of music is sung (classical, contemporary and spirituals), while giving emphasis to counting rhythms and reading pitches.
Junior High Band This course is an elective for students in grades 7 - 9 who have had one or more years of instrumental lessons. The objective of the band program is to train the students to play their instruments skillfully. Students participate in weekly rehearsals and lessons which will result in a greater enjoyment and appreciation of sacred and secular music. The band performs at least two times each year.
Music Appreciation This course is required for all seventh graders for one semester. The course is intended to: 1) increase the students' knowledge of music history by studying the various time periods of music from Biblical times to the 20th, 2) develop the students understanding and appreciation for music, especially as a means to worship and praise God, 3) help the students develop high personal standards in the music that they listen to and give him a source of enjoyment he can use throughout his life.
Ensemble Selected after an audition, members of Revelation and Reflection’s earn ½ credit of fine arts credit upon completion of assigned practices and a spring tour. Applied Music Students have been allowed to earn ½ credit by taking private music lessons from qualified teachers who are not necessarily connected to our school. The present plan requires participation in the New York State School Music Association as a final evaluation. Private teachers are required to submit grades for each marking period. The responsibility for approving the private music instruction and for the results of the examination rests with the schools music chairperson.
