Art Appreciation A one semester, one half credit required course. This is a survey course covering elements of design, drawing, painting, art history, commercial art, printmaking and ceramics. Basic Art A one half credit elective course offered to students in grades nine through twelve. The course covers drawing, painting, art history, art as visual communication and basic silkscreen printing.
Studio Art A one half credit elective course offered to students in grades ten through twelve who have successfully completed Basic Art. The course covers principles of composition, the relationship between art and culture, art as personal expression, and various projects that give opportunity to draw, paint and use mixed media.
Drawing and Painting A one half credit elective course offered to students in grades eleven and twelve who have successfully completed Studio Art I. (Occasionally a gifted student may be allowed, on the recommendation of the instructor, to complete Studio Art and Drawing and Painting concurrently.) Students in Drawing and Painting complete a required number of projects individually chosen in consultation with the instructor. The students generally make choice of media, and the instructor offers guidance and help as needed. Advanced Studio – A one credit elective course offered to students in grades eleven and twelve who have successfully completed Studio Art. The content of the course is identical to Drawing and Painting; the difference is in the amount of class time, the number of projects required and the amount of credit received.
Mixed Media A one half credit elective course offered to students in grades eleven and twelve who have successfully completed Studio Art I. The course explores collage, paper making, print-making, mono printing and batik. May be repeated for credit as Studio in Mixed Media II. Photography – A one half credit elective course offered to students in grade twelve. It covers black and white photography. Students learn to shoot pictures, develop their own negatives and print their own pictures. The course teaches both the technical and aesthetic aspects of good photography.
